A beloved Portuguese shoe brand faced its end, until a fateful Instagram post inspired a customer to become its new guardian. This is the story of MARAY’s second act, a testament to serendipity and Portuguese craftsmanship.
Some stories are not meant to end. For Portuguese shoe brand MARAY, a simple message posted to the quiet scroll of a social media feed, announcing its intended closure, became not an epilogue, but the start of an unexpected second chapter. It is a story that speaks to the deep connection a brand can forge with its community, and a testament to the enduring spirit of Portuguese craft.
MARAY was first established in 2017 out of a personal necessity. Founder Rita Corrêa Mendes, then a marketing director with a keen eye for style, found herself searching for footwear that the market could not provide: flat, colourful shoes that were an extension of her own “playful, uncomplicated and elegant” personality. The result was a collection of statement flat shoes designed for women leading dynamic lives, women who no longer believed they needed high heels to feel confident and empowered. With an aesthetic she described as “ethnic cosmopolitan,” each pair was brought to life by experienced artisans in Portugal, using carefully selected leathers and natural pigments to create shoes with character and soul.
However, in 2019, the brand’s journey was poised to come to a close. That is, until Joana Trigueiros, a loyal MARAY customer, saw the founder’s farewell message on Instagram. For Joana, this was not an ending, but a call to action. It was a moment of transformation that would alter both her own path and the brand’s destiny.
Joana’s connection to footwear feels pre-written. She grew up in her family’s shoe shop in the town of Torres Vedras, “selling shoes before she learnt how to read or numbers”. Though she went on to build a formidable 18-year career in finance and marketing for global corporations, she admits the roots of the craft were always there. The opportunity to acquire MARAY was a return to that origin. “I’d say it was written in the stars!” she reflects. A month after sending her inquiry, the contract was signed, and MARAY was reborn.
Under Joana’s stewardship, the brand has deepened its commitment to its founding principles while being guided by a leader with an innate understanding of the craft. The philosophy remains centered on creating irreverent, elegant shoes that offer uncompromising comfort. This is not about chasing trends, but about creating enduring pieces that honour the integrity of their materials. The collections, with their home in Lisbon’s sophisticated neighbourhoods, continue to be entirely made in Portugal, a country with a rich, centuries-old shoemaking heritage.
In the hands of skilled artisans, soft suedes, textured leathers, and bold colours are transformed into iconic MARAY designs. Models like the Blossom slipper, with its signature vibrant fringe, are not merely accessories, but expressions of individuality. Each pair carries the subtle marks of the maker’s hand, a quiet reminder of the slow fashion values embedded in its creation—durability, quality, and a deep respect for the process.

The story of MARAY is a distinctly modern one, yet it is rooted in a timeless appreciation for things made with intention. It is a narrative of two women: one who created a brand out of a personal vision, and another who, guided by passion and heritage, stepped in to ensure its continuation. To wear a pair of MARAY shoes is to carry a piece of that story, a story of serendipity, resilience, and the quiet confidence of walking your own path.
