Sketching the Future with a Stroke of the Past.

From a Humble Pencil Manufacturer in Portugal to a Global Innovator in Art Supplies.

Viarco is a distinguished pencil manufacturer from Portugal that has been providing artists with exceptional and innovative art supplies for over a century. The company has a remarkable history that dates back to 1907 when Conselheiro Figueiredo Faria and Engineer Jules Cacheux founded Portugália, the very first pencil manufacturing unit in Portugal. Despite facing various economic challenges during World War I and the Great Depression, Viarco persevered and continued to thrive under the leadership of Manoel Vieira Araújo since 1931. In 1936, the brand “Viarco” was registered, and the company relocated to its present state-of-the-art facilities in S. João da Madeira in 1941. Later on, in the 1970s, it became a limited liability company known as “Viarco – Indústria de Lápis, Lda”.

Today, Viarco’s family-owned business offers a wide range of high-quality art supplies such as pencils, drawing tools, coloring products, and paper materials. Among its exceptional offerings, the ArtGraf line stands out, featuring innovative products like ArtGraf Nº1, a soft graphite putty, ArtGraf Tailor Shape, a block of pressed pigment, ArtGraf XL, an extra-large handmade water-soluble graphite stick, ArtGraf Watercolour Graphite, a product that allows artists to paint with a pencil, and ArtGraf Graphite Powder, a water-soluble graphite powder that offers artists the opportunity to explore new techniques and approaches.

Viarco’s commitment to innovation extends beyond its product line. The company has launched various initiatives and projects aimed at redefining the role of pencils in art and design. For example, the ColorADD project was developed to enable color-blind individuals to identify colors correctly, while the Turn It Turn It project reimagines the pencil as an object and sign, promoting creative reflection on its significance, form, function, and connection to contemporary design.

Viarco’s dedication to quality and innovation has not gone unnoticed by the industry. The company’s Risko product received an honorable mention in the category of Excellent Product Design – Office Furniture at the German Design Awards, highlighting Viarco’s position as a leader in the field of art supplies.

As the only pencil manufacturer in Portugal, Viarco takes pride in maintaining its family-owned business status. José Vieira, the great-grandson of the founder and current administrator of Viarco, believes that the company’s reinvention and focus on quality, innovation, and design have enabled it to thrive.

Today, Viarco is not just a pencil manufacturer; it is a hub of creativity and innovation, a brand that artists and creatives around the world can trust and rely on for exceptional and innovative art supplies.
