An Exciting Journey into Craftsmanship!

The journey of an authentic Portuguese artisan often begins in the most unexpected ways, with delightful moments that change everything! For João Bruno Videira, this pivotal moment occurred in 2006, when a simple chair repair request set him off on a remarkable journey into the world of Portuguese craftsmanship.

At the time, João Bruno Videira was a talented TV journalist, sharing captivating stories through words and images. But as he removed a broken straw seat and spontaneously replaced it with his mother’s wool, he discovered a deep connection to a rich heritage. This small act didn’t just fix a chair; it opened the door to a new passion that he had yet to explore!

Growing up in Tomar, João Bruno Videira was surrounded by the beauty of Portuguese wool. His mother crafted stunning Arraiolos rugs, a tradition steeped in history. Those vivid childhood memories of colors and patterns were reignited during that fateful encounter with the chair.

Today, he transforms his vision into reality from a beautifully restored historic grinding factory in Tomar. This vibrant workspace now thrives with the energy of modern Portuguese artisans, showcasing how a deep-rooted heritage can beautifully evolve into contemporary artistry. Let’s celebrate this inspiring journey of creativity and tradition!

A Creative Approach to Handwoven Design

What truly makes João Bruno Videira shine in the handwoven design realm is his innovative method, he doesn’t use a loom at all! Instead, he transforms each piece, whether it’s a chair, bench, or sculpture, into its own unique loom. By weaving wool directly onto the frame, João embraces a tactile and engaging process that celebrates patience, intuition, and an abundance of thread.

This incredible loom-less technique not only turns furniture into sculptures but also elevates craft to a stunning art form. With each creation, João blends spontaneity and careful artistry, allowing the immediacy of his hands and vision to guide him.

In his work, you’ll find a beautiful dialogue between precision and flow. One side features geometry, radiating balance and harmony, while the other embraces nature’s organic, playful, and unpredictable spirit. His geometric sculptures, inspired by timeless Platonic forms, and handcrafted Portuguese chairs, reflecting the intricate patterns of tree roots, exemplify this stunning duality. They bring together intellectual rigor with heartfelt beauty, creating a bridge between functional design and fine art.

Authenticity is at the heart of João’s craft. He utilizes the same 3-yarn twisted Arraiolos wool cherished in traditional carpets for generations. This remarkable material not only showcases its strength and adaptability but also connects his work to Portugal’s rich cultural legacy, paving the way for fresh expressions of sustainable furniture.

Standout pieces, such as the Évora Chair, a creative twist on the classic Portuguese iron-and-straw design, and the captivating Dodecahedron sculpture, illustrate how ancient geometry finds new life in wool. Each piece pays tribute to tradition while boldly stepping into the future!
